Lewis A. and Rose Laub Coser papers, 1846-2003 (bulk 1951-2000).

This collection includes correspondence with Penn State University sociology professor, Alan Sica, and editorial correspondence with Cambridge University Press, among others. Clippings from newspapers and magazines are included, most notably from Dissent. Many publications written by both Lewis and Rose Coser are present, including Rose Coser's The World of our Mothers. The papers also contain research notes created and used by Lewis and Rose Coser for their respective dissertations and scholarly publications, as well as reprints of publications and articles authored by the two. Rose Coser's research notes on the subject of sociologist Anne Parsons, and copies of Parson's thesis and dissertation are included in the papers, as well as collected book reviews.

Sociologist. Coser was born in Berlin and came to the United States in 1939. She received her Ph. D. from Columbia in 1957, and served on the faculty at SUNY-Stony Brook for many years. Lewis A. Coser (1913-2003) and Rose Laub Coser (1916-1994) were German-born, progressive academic sociologists. Lewis Coser was co-founder of Dissent magazine. He founded the sociology department at Brandeis and taught there for over fifteen years before moving on to SUNY- Stony Brook where he remained until retiring.
